All week the temps have been in the 90s with lots of humidity. I should mention that due to BGE’s 50% rate increase, I’m afraid to use the a/c! It doesn’t seem to help that much in the daytime anyhow. So we’re coping the old fashioned ways: lots of iced tea, cold showers and open windows with fans. Help is on the way as it’s supposed to start raining and cool down tonight.
On the Hook: A crocheted edging (in 2 colors- maize & white) for “The Dog” blanket. Note to self- no more flannel work in tropical weather!!!!
Finished reading: Red Mesa by A & D Thurlo. I think I’ve now read all the Ella Clah books except the 1st, which might be out of print and the very newest, which the local library, per my request, has on order. I’m #1 in line to read it! Not sure what to read next. Something light for sure. I have another book on request by Anne Bronte and I didn’t even know there was a 3rd Bronte sister. I found Knit the Classics on blogspot.com and that’s the book for July- I’ll give it a chance if it comes in on time.
Tesla the Dog would like the known Internet world to know that he killed another groundhog. Since I wasn’t home at the time, he brought the furry corpse in to show it off. I put on latex gloves, got a trashbag to remove it and sprayed the carpet with lysol- thanks Tesla! He’ll be blissfully happy for the next week with dreams of canine glory. I’m grateful that their monthly worm pill is due on the 1st- groundhogs are cute at a distance but they are wild burrowing rodents! I wasn’t always this heartless, but living in the country, I see death so often. Now and then I’ll have a good cry. Please hug your pets- they don’t know how good they have it!
Finished “Bones to Pick” by Carolyn Haines Amusing if you can apply that word to murder mysteries. The ongoing adventures of private detective Sarah Booth Delaney, her hound dog Sweetie Pie, a ghost named Jitty and misc. other fun Southern characters.
Also- a fast 12 hour read for “Sandcastles” by Luanne Rice She’s a good romance author. This book reminded me of Danielle Steele. Not a bad thing, but I knew how it was going to end before it ended.
Just started: “Red Mesa” by Aimee & David Thurlo One of their series of books about Navajo tribal policeman, Ella Clah. She’s a great character walking the line between the old and the new. The storyline of the Navajo ways, lots of New Mexico “scenery”, and the many characters have made it a great series.
I made the “Baby Yoda” sweater designed by Cari from dogsstealyarn.com I used a sage green acrylic. I love the feel of natural fibers, but so many are allergic!!! Also, bought some Bernat Boucle with the idea of making the Yoda sweater out of that. I love/hate the yarn. It’s very soft and light. But it’s hard to see stitches and hard to undo work when the envitable errors happen. I didn’t want to waste the yarn, so I ended up making a simple v-neck style vest. My first crack at making the pattern up as I went along- came out pretty well. Seems like a good light topper for a small person wearing a turtleneck- a little more warmth without bulk! I feel a crochet binge coming on, but at a future date, I want to work in cotton yarn a bit.
But the whole Michael not having to go to work is nice.
I Made: Some really good chicken enchilada casserole with green chile sauce. No recipe but about 9 corn tortillas, vidallia onion finely sliced and sauteed in oil, finely diced cooked chicken (about 1 1/2 breasts) shredded sharp cheddar cheese and Carlino green chili sauce. Layered lasagna style and baked at 325 for an hour. Very good!
Finished: Little Duck Baby Blanket And started edging “The Dog!” blanket Pictures soon!
Watched: another strange film, Black Narcissus, 1947 from a novel by Rumer Godden About a group of Anglo nuns who set up shop in a palace high up in Darjeeling. It’s just old enough that the story has an undercurrent of that generation’s attitude that everything non white and Christian must be wickedly savage. The movie had a Buddhist holy man painted up to look like an “Abbo”- shirtless men pounding on drums in the bamboo jungles of Darjeeling (huh?) and more than one African Grey parrot, which I don’t understand because that’s definitely Mynah Bird country! Not Deborah Kerr’s finest. No stars- two question marks for this one
A Short Requiem: When I was at CSULB there was a whole bunch of guys that went around wearing field jackets from their previous military service. It was like they couldn’t let go of that experience. One I knew was this guy Jerry. He wasn’t a Vietnam vet because he was mid-thirties then. He was a doper. I think he was going to school to get the GI bill. Didn’t know all that much about him except he was from Milwaukee, don’t know if he was ever married or had kids- just somebody I knew at school. But I remembered him the other day and curiosity got the better of me. Given the state he was in back in 1973 I figured by 2007 he’d have passed on. Yep, he was in the SocSecurity Death Index, died in 1991. There’s a database for every veteran who’s served and where they are buried. So now I know a bit more. I don’t know how it happened that he died on New Year’s Eve, but I know he died in California and his final stop was a cemetary near Milwaukee. RIP Jerry- hope it was a good trip….
She Has Fun:I was up in a chatroom til 2 a.m. last night. I subscribe to the Streamlink for the radio show Coast2Coastam. Comes with use of the bulletin board. For some reason, we don’t have an online chatroom, but we get online at the same time and post back and forth. The guest on the show was talking about the RFK assassination, but collectively the people online to talk didn’t want a downer. So it became our virtual 60′s party. Old people like me got to reminisce. One guy found me a picture of a Red 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner. I even met another woman a little younger than me that grew up in Lakewood- one town over! I’m like that character in a “My Name Is Earl” episode- I know all kinds of people, but more and more of them seem to live in cyberspace!
WELCOME TO THE NEW BLOG!
I decided that since I was hijacking all of Pamela & Kurt’s blog space, I ought to get my own!
It’s a gorgeous, not hot Friday. Got my errands done and sat down to learn how to become an Internet blogger
I’M READING: Well, just finished actually- Treasure Box by Orson Scott Card Not bad. Reminded me of a Dean Koontz book. If you enjoy spooky, it was pretty good.
WORKING ON: Thread Crochet! Finishing up the edging for a California baby blanket! I’ll get back to knitting in the Fall and start some Christmas things.
JUST WATCHED: File under “Film Noir”- The Salton Sea with Val Kilmer and Vincent D’Onofrio- about the dismal world of crystal meth. Kilmer plays a user trying to get even with bad guys. Not a bad film, but no happy ending and no heroes. I wouldn’t want to watch too many films like this. Rated D for disturbing.
